Pascal's wager

A fervent Christian woman asked the pilgrim, several years ago, incredulously, “how could you, who had given your whole life to worshipping God, come to decide you didn’t have to? What about Pascal’s Wager? Either God exists, or he doesn’t. If he does, it’s vital to believe in him. If you say you do, and it turns out he doesn’t exist, nothing lost. Why can’t you take that chance?”

His answer unsatisfying to her was, “what if God does exist, and I come to decide—that as far as I can honestly determine--- he or she or it does not, or at least, it doesn’t matter.  Isn’t it likely he or she have the sense of humor and sympathy to say “it hardly matters what you believe. You worked at it. Come see if there is a promised land.” (Genesis 12:1).
